Darran Park Circular Walk

Take a walk around a mythical lake and then head on up into the mountains for breathtaking views of the traditional mining towns of Maerdy, Tylorstown, Blaenllechau and the famous “Old Smokey” which is an old coal tip that stand out on the horizon for miles.

The walk is perfect for families and dog-walkers and there are plenty of places to stop for a picnic along the way, including the lovely Park View Pond right on the top of the mountain.

As you descend back into Darran Park, take time to walk the peaceful lake – known as Llyn Y Forwyn (Maiden’s Pool).

Legend has it a local farmer took his horse to drink in the lake and the mysterious “Nelferch” emerged from the waters, where she lived with her cattle. He fell in love instantly and begged her to marry. The couple lived blissfully on the farm until, one day they argued, and Nelferch returned to the lake, never to be seen again (or has she?!).

After your walk, you can explore the busy streets of the Rhondda Fach, as this area is known, which are lined with tiny terraced houses that seem to cling to the sides of the mountain. Shops that have been in families for generations, chapels, community halls and cafes remain from the bustling days of coal mining.
