Darran Park
Darran Park is an Edwardian Park and home to the lake Llyn y Forwyn (Maiden's Pool) which is famed in welsh legend.
The Park has towering cliffs which oversee the ancient woodland around.
There are a number of paths, with a recreation area and a play area plus plenty of spots to enjoy a picnic.
A series of walks lead off into the mountains surrounding Darren Park, from which you can enjoy spectacular views over the Rhondda Fach, including the famed "Old Smokey", which remains from our coal mining industry.
The lake, Llywn y Forwyn is named so as it is said a beautiful maiden, who lived in the lake, appeared from the waters before a local farmer, who fell in love with her instantly.
He asked what it would take for her to marry him and she said she would, as long as he never asked about her past.
They lived happily until he broke the promise, so she left him penniless and returned to the waters. It is said you can often hear the maiden calling from the lake. In more modern times, the lake is a popular fishing spot, stocked with carp, eels perch, pike and bream.
Day permits are available via the Llyn Y Forwen Angling Club.
